This is not your average art school. What was once a small art class ran in the home of owners Mr. and Mrs. Hongyun, has now turned into a full-time school, summer camp, and event location for all different age groups. “My wife loves art and wanted to pursue teaching, so she held classes inside our apartment”, says Tommy Hongyun, “She started with about 2-3 students and over the course of a year, we outgrew to about 90 students! We then decided to open up a permanent shop and turn it into a business.”
Based in Cupertino, California, most of the Hongyun Art Clubs and Camps are team-based projects where students work together to create their own books and other artworks. The studio makes a great effort to hire only the best teachers, hiring teachers as far away as Japan! Read about their staff here.
The goal at Hongyun Art is to ‘create creative, outgoing individuals that are able to work well with others, come up with and share great ideas, and most importantly be fearless in executing their ideas.’
She started with about 2-3 students and over the course of a year, we outgrew to about 90 students! We then decided to open up a permanent shop and turn it into a business.
They would have to sort through the whole schedule just to find their name! We were also constantly changing the spreadsheet whenever an employee requested a shift change.
As their business grew, they needed more employees and teachers to help manage the different classes. Most of the new hires are current students and work part-time to balance out their already busy schedule. To help organize their employees shifts, they used a basic spreadsheet to upload each staff member’s schedules. “We would screenshot the spreadsheet and upload it to a shared Google site for our staff to see”, explains Tommy, “They would have to sort through the whole schedule just to find their name! We were also constantly changing the spreadsheet whenever an employee requested a shift change.”
The owners knew that there had to be a better solution. “That process became very complicated and time consuming”, says Tommy, “Most employees couldn’t view it on their mobile devices. It would take hours each day to sort out.”
The owners switched to Deputy and implemented it into their business right away. “We have fully automated the entire scheduling process onto Deputy now”, says Tommy, “We love that employees have control of their schedules now.”
Tommy further explains how essential Deputy has become apart of their business: “We are currently developing a back-end system that will integrate with Deputy so that our staff and teachers can easily check in and view their schedules.”
Deputy saved the owners hours of busy work a week. “Deputy helped us solve a lot of problems. We don’t have to constantly remind our staff when they are scheduled, and we don’t have to manually update any shift changes,” says Tommy, “Our employees love it and it helps keep them accountable and show up on time.”
