How to use this cashier performance review template
When done properly, a cashier's performance evaluation can help an employee grow and become a valuable talent. However, if a performance review is done poorly, then you may discourage the employee.
Here are some tips to make sure reviews are a positive and constructive experience.
Do
Remind employees of your expectations: If cashiers aren’t performing as expected, don’t hesitate to review business standards with them during reviews. They may have forgotten certain rules or been improperly trained.
Be careful of how you address performance gaps: All people have a lot of things going on in their lives that can affect performance. If you notice a sudden dip in performance, go into reviews with an open mind and ask questions.
Offer staff performance tools: If there are gaps, offer resources so the cashier can improve, such as mentoring or additional training.
Connect to employees on a personal level: Reviews are a wonderful opportunity to have 1:1 time with your cashiers. If you have a lot of employees or multiple locations, this may be harder to do. Use reviews to connect with them on a human level.
Explain employee ratings: Some cashiers may be surprised by their ratings and ask questions. Take the time to explain the rating and manager notes, if there are any.
Reward consistent high performers: When a cashier shows a record of high performance, take this opportunity to acknowledge their hard work. This could be with a wage increase or advancement opportunities.
Celebrate performance improvements: When a staff member works hard to improve their performance, they should be rewarded. Even a simple acknowledgement can go a long way.
Do Not
Have a punishment mindset: Performance reviews should never be used as a tool to punish poor-performing employees. If employees do something dangerous or offensive, call it out in the moment rather than saving it for a scheduled review.
Focus only on the negatives: Performance reviews should always balance positive and constructive feedback. They are not meant for listing all the things a cashier did wrong, which will likely demotivate them.
Make review information public: The only people you should be discussing a staff member’s performance review with are the employee and their manager. Other than that, it should be private information.
Hide a rating’s reasoning: As mentioned before, many employees may ask about their ratings to better understand the reasoning. If you don’t share it, maybe assuming that employees want to argue with your reasons, then the staff member can’t improve.
Speed through review meetings: Take time with each review. If you rush through them, you are sending a negative message to cashiers and can lower team morale.
Let personal bias affect ratings: All performance reviews must be conducted impartially to create an accurate picture of how the cashier and the entire store are performing.
Dwell on multiple performance gaps in a single meeting: Pick and choose what performance gaps should be addressed with a staff member if they have many. Going over too many at once will be overwhelming, and the cashier won’t take in your advice.
