According to CareerBuilder’s annual survey of employees and human resources managers, 40% of workers have called in sick in 2017 when they actually weren’t. The same survey also found that about one-quarter of employers have said they’ve fired someone for concocting a fake excuse.

The survey was based on responses from 2,257 hiring and HR managers and 3,697 full-time employees. Below are some of the craziest excuses employers reported:

  • A bear was in the employee’s yard and they were afraid to come out.

  • The employee’s phone exploded and it hurt their hand.

  • The employee ate a toothpick in his food at a restaurant.

  • The employee broke his arm wrestling a female bodybuilder.

  • The employee called in “fat” because their uniform didn’t fit.

  • Her dog swallowed an employee’s car keys so she was waiting until it came out.

  • An employee left his clothes at the laundromat.

  • An employee did not have enough gas to get to work.

  • An employee had to reschedule a new manicure because some of their artificial nails fell off.

  • An employee was not sure how the solar eclipse would affect them so it would be safer to stay at home.


What to do on the day of a no call no show

If employers and employees are left scrambling to cover the no call no show employee, that can affect the performance of the entire shift and lead to a poor customer experience. Minimizing absenteeism is a necessity for businesses of all sizes, especially small businesses.
