What does it mean to you to stay relevant?
You have to be at the top of your game. You always have to be looking at what’s going on, talking to your guests, looking at what the competitors are doing and always looking to innovate. Try things, see what sticks, keep what works, and keep moving. If things don’t work, just keep going.
How are you using mobile technologies to grow your business?
Mobile is everywhere. Everyone’s got mobile ordering apps. Consumers are using loyalty apps. Establishments are using labor scheduling apps. The biggest challenge is figuring out how to work all of those into one ecosystem. We want everything on mobile that’s possible to have on mobile.
What’s the best excuse you’ve heard for someone not coming into work?
We had an employee that was the district manager for Cinnabon and he was filmed on Undercover Boss but he didn’t realize it and when he found out he had to fly to California to be on the final episode.
What was your first hourly-paid job?
When I was 15 or 16, I worked in an ice cream store at the beach. I thought I was hired to be the stock boy, but it turned out I was actually hired to be the dishwasher and freezer-inventory boy. They gave me a big, heavy, winter jacket and I had to go in the ice cream freezer — which was 30°F below — for about an hour at a time to count all the inventory.
What life lessons did that job teach you?
I learned how important it is to think about your employees and what’s important for them. There were some things that really bothered me about my position, my pay, how I was treated, and how I was actually scheduled. It’s important to do what you need to do for business, but keep in mind how important it is to keep your employees happy, too.
