I get asked this question frecently (frequenty/recently), whether we will release a Android or Windows version of our kiosk?
Short answer to this question is “No”.
Long answer (TLDR)
No #1 reason – Security concerns
We originally built the kiosk as a HTML5 app and thought of running it with phonegap in both iOS and Android. We found it to be rather unstable in Android and not so secure. There are ways to unlock (with root access) the android platform. In comparison iOS is a rock solid platform and with proper settings applied, it’s unbreakable. Therefore we have made the Kiosk a fully native iOS app and put it through rigorous testing! Every day every second someone uses the Deputy kiosk in this world.
Common questions –
1) IPAD IS MORE EXPENSIVE?
Yes, there are Android tablets that may be cheaper than iPads. However they are neither powerful nor as robust as the iPad. We have tested the iPad to allow up to 30+ login/out/clock in/out per minute in busy periods with offline data storage -> such traffic will literally crash low end android devices. Besides, if you compare the cost of an iPad mini with traditional finger scanners, it’s still ten times cheaper and provides 100 times the functionality. At the end of the day, you are providing a tool for the employees to use. So let’s provide a good solution. The cost of an iPad is a business expense and in many countries like Australia it’s a fully tax deductible item.
2) WHY DID YOU MAKE AN ANDROID EMPLOYEE APP THEN?
Originally we had an iPhone app only but with many android users out there we felt they were somewhat disadvantaged on enjoying the full experience of Deputy. Since the employee app is rather BYOD (Bring your own device), we cannot enforce everyone to buy our preferred device just so that they can connect with their workplace.
3) SO WHAT’S AHEAD?
Being iOS focussed allows us build quality and solid software. There are so many awesome features in our roadmap for the iPad Kiosk – stay tuned for some really cool updates.
