At Deputy, we know that staying compliant with Fair Work’s complex industry awards can be challenging for many businesses, which is why we’re committed to building the right tools to make staying compliant simple.

Fair Work periodically make changes to these awards, which can impact how you pay your team. We will keep you in the loop whenever this happens, as it may require you to make an update.

Fair Work are introducing changes to selected penalty rates in the General Retail Industry Award (GRIA) 2010 that will be effective beginning the first full pay run on or after 1 November 2018. To remain compliant you will need to update the award in Deputy for any employee paid under GRIA ahead of this time. For example, if you run a Monday –  Sunday weekly payroll, this will mean that you need to have completed the update before Sunday 11th November 2018.

In summary, the Fair Work Commission has increased the weekday evening (Monday to Friday after 6pm) and Saturday penalty rates for all casual workers, and  decreased Sunday shift work penalty rates for both casual workers and permanent employees (full-time and part-time).

The changes to these penalty rates will be phased in from 1 November 2018, and progressively take effect over the next few years. You can see a summary of the changes and phasing for each rate change in the table below, or visit the Fair Work Ombudsman Website for more details.

Any of your employees that fulfil the above criteria (a casual shift worker, or a part-time or full-time shift worker under the GRIA), will need to have their award updated inside their Deputy profile to remain compliant with Fair Work.

To do this, navigate to the People tab in your Deputy account, then select the employee that you need to update. From here, select Edit Profile, and then the Pay Rates tab along the left hand side.

From the dropdown Pay Rates field at the top of the page, you will need to update to one of the following:
