Being an effective manager is all about communication. It’s really important to be able to give feedback to your workers, whether it’s dishing out praise or criticism. Recognise a good job well done when it happens and halt underperformance in its tracks.
Of course, while praise is easy to give, it’s far more challenging to tell one of your workers that what they’re doing isn’t quite up to scratch.
But rather than shying away from this unpleasant task, as a business owner or manager, it’s critical that you get your criticism right. If just one of your workers is underperforming, it puts additional stress and workload on everyone else.
When this is the case, you need to show your employee where they need to improve. Yet studies show that employees react to a negative interaction with their boss far more strongly than they react to a positive one. So how do you criticise an employee without it significantly affecting their well-being or their productivity?
It’s not what you say, but how you say it
First and foremost, you need to be cautious before criticising an employee. Try to be empathetic and phrase improvement suggestions in an encouraging way. People respond far more positively to gentle prompts such as “what if we tried” or “have you considered” rather than a don’t do this, or you “shouldn’t do that”. It’s also helpful to frame the feedback with specific examples so there’s something your employee can take away and work on.
At the same time, eye contact, gestures, and the tone of your voice are all important to delivering the message in a positive way.
Once you’ve given the feedback, make sure you monitor your employee and once you see improvements, back it up with positive feedback.
Appreciation is a fundamental human need. When you recognise good work, your employees feel their work is valued – and this leads to higher levels of job satisfaction and productivity. Remember, if you’re especially impressed by one of your employees – then let them know.
